Quarantine Birthday

Alicia BiceComment

So, I’m a little late with this post because my birthday was March 20, but better late than never, right? This birthday was definitely an interesting one and I definitely won’t forget it for two reasons. Reason one, it’s right when things started closing and they wanted us to stay home, and reason two, I got one of the best presents my husband has ever gotten me, a new fur child! Before I share that story, I want to share another one real quick so y’all get a little back story.

I haven’t really talked about it here on my blog, but if you follow me on instagram you probably saw that in November something terrible happened. My fur baby Abbie went missing and we never found her. She would have been 17 this past February. I got her for my 12th birthday, so I had her over half my life. To me and my husband she was like our child, we think pets are family. She couldn't see well and I’m pretty sure she was almost deaf if not all the way and one night she wondered off when I let her out to go to the bathroom. I know she had a long and happy life, but it was so hard on me because I felt like it was my fault for not keeping an eye on her. It is still really hard for me because I grew up with her and I feel like a piece of me is missing.

Fast forward two months, our other fur child Brutus got ran over by newer people in our neighborhood who always drives way too fast. She did stop and tell me what happened, but ever since they moved in everyone who stays with them drives crazy and we have kids and dogs around us so it is very frustrating. Anyways, we say Brutus adopted us because him and another dog were dropped off here before we moved in and one of the neighbors took in the other, and everyone else kept an eye on and fed Brutus. When we moved in our house we took him in and named him. He was mainly outside until something was wrong with his legs and he couldn’t use his back two. We took him to the vet and when he was finally well enough to come home he stayed inside until he got better, then slowly he would come in here and there, then he finally started sleeping inside. He was definitely spoiled too and would always go running with me. He loved running and was the sweetest dog you have even met.

It’s safe to say it was a really hard few months for us. A few months after Abbie I was starting to kind of want another small dog, but then when Brutus happened, I didn’t know if I could handle it. I get so attached because like I said I feel like pets are family and like our kids because my husband and I don’t have human kids.

Fast forward another couple weeks and it was starting to get pretty lonely with no pets. My husband is a lineman for TVA and travels for work sometimes and about this time the tornados in Nashville hit and he was gone for two weeks. It was just so different being completely alone and not having a little fur baby greet me when I got home from work or keep me company while my hubby was gone. My husband thought the same thing, so the week before my birthday, just a day after he got back from the storm working 15-16 hour days, he drove a total of 16 hours to surprise me with the newest member of our family, Daisy. He wouldn’t tell me where he was going and he wouldn’t even give me a hint at what my present was. When he was going to pick her up I was at work and all day me and my friends were trying to guess what it could be. Several said it was a dog, but I didn’t think it would be after losing both ours and he said no more dogs. It was driving me crazy because all he would tell me was how long it took to get there. It was almost 10pm when he finally made it home and he made me close my eyes and when I opened them I saw the cutest little baby ever. Daisy is a mini golden doodle and that is the type of dog I wanted if we ever got another one. Not going to lie, I ugly cried. I just couldn’t believe that he drove all that way for this precious little baby for my birthday. I don’t know why it surprises me because my husband is amazing and I am so lucky to have him.

I wasn't able to take a weekend trip, or go out to eat with friends or family for my birthday this year, but my husband and Daisy made up for it. Even though Covid 19 is making the last year in my 20’s rather interesting, at least I’ve been able to be home with Daisy and cuddle with her and work on her potty training. In case you were wondering, it’s going really well. She sits by the door when she has to potty and we have been working on tricks with her. Right now she can sit and she’s starting to get lay down and high five. It will definitely be hard to go back to work once everything gets back to normal.

When I sat down to write this post I didn’t really plan on it being so sad, so hopefully it didn’t make y’all sad. It was honestly a little hard to write, but I wanted y’all to see how special getting Daisy was and how much it meant to me. Keep scrolling if you want to see her cute face! She also has an instagram page if y’all want to follow her and see more of her. I’ll link it here. Just curious, do y’all consider pets family?
