Closet Staples

Alicia BiceComment

I had a request to do a post on my closet staples, so these are the items I think are great for everyone to have. What a closet staple means to me is a basic clothing or accessory item that can be styled multiple ways. I have a few clothing pieces and a few accessories. A couple of the clothing pieces I have three options, but you can definitely just have one. It will make more sense once I get to them. Most of the items I will link, so you can click the picture to shop. I will also put the shoppable (not sure if that’s a word but I made it one) pictures in my shop tab.

PS- I also thought I would give mirror selfies a try for this post.

PSS- Yes I know my mirror is dirty. I know I should have cleaned it first but oh well. Y’all know I like to keep it real, haha.

PSSS- I have a special guest in some pictures, my fur child Abbie.

The first closet staple that I think everyone should have in their closet is a white t-shirt. You can have a dressier one and a casual one, but at least have one plain white tee. You can do so many things with this item. Dress it up, dress it down, wear it for any season by paring it with shorts, jeans, jacket, cardigan, pretty much anything. It is perfect for fall because you can just add a denim button up or any color button up over it or tie it around your waist to add some color. The one I am wearing is my favorite for multiple reasons. It fits well, it’s very comfortable, and it was super affordable. I got it at Forever 21 for probably around $10, if that.

This next item is also a must have, and that is a little black dress. If you wanted to buy one thing from this list, a LBD should definitely be it. The one I have on is great because it is simple. It has pretty lace detailing on the back and it is easy to dress up or dress down. I have worn this dress with heels and with sandals. You can also add kimonos or jackets to this as well transitioning into fall. It would also be cute with some over the knee boots. You can wear it for girls night, date night, parties, the possibilities are endless with a little black dress!

Now onto one of the items I have three different variations of, skinny jeans. Out of all three styles, just a basic pair of denim skinny jeans are great to have, especially in fall/winter. The reason these are great for those seasons is because they are best for tucking into boots because you don’t have all the extra fabric that normal jeans do. Skinny jeans are also cute with flats or heels that you want to show off. I would personally do a medium-dark wash for these because I feel like that is easy to dress up or down as well. I am all about outfits you can wear either way. The ones I’m wearing are from American Eagle.

The next skinny jean I think is great to have, sticking with the traditional denim is distressed. These of course aren’t for everyone, but I love them. Especially for fall because it’s still a little too warm for “whole” pants, and the holes in distressed ones give you a little breeze, haha. These are also from American Eagle and I actually got these for $20! If you shop at American Eagle you know that is pretty much unheard of, haha. They were on sale and then discounted from the sale price. I did get them at an outlet mall though. I think I got them at Orange Beach, AL outlets. Whenever I was linking them I did see they are on sale online for $29.99, which is still pretty good for American Eagle.

Then the last pair of skinny jeans I think is good to have is a black pair. These are a little distressed too, but not as much as the previous ones. I am in love with these and funny story, I got them by accident. I have recently been loving Old Navy and I have started getting my work pants there because they are so comfortable and they go on sale a lot. Well, I was in there one day to get another pair of the jeans I had been wearing and loved and I just looked at the waistband to see the style and size. I didn’t open them to look at the pants because the style said the same thing as the ones I already bought. When I got home I was taking the tags and everything off and I noticed there were holes and frayed bottoms! I tried them on and instantly feel in love. I just think it’s funny because they are some of my favorites and I didn’t even mean to get them. That usually doesn’t happen to me, haha.

I probably don’t even need to tell y’all to get these, but I think it is good to have AT LEAST one pair of solid black leggings. I probably couldn’t even tell you how many pairs I have, but that’s beside the point. This is the last clothing item I’ll be mentioning and it is also the other item I have three different styles to talk about. The first one which is probably my favorite is one with fun cut-outs. I love wearing these when I travel or run errands because they go with almost anything and add a little something with the cut-outs. I’m pretty sure I got these at TJ Maxx or Marshall’s, so y’all know they were super affordable. These are a cotton material, so probably not the best for working out in and they do attract lint, but they are still super cute.

The next two pair are a little pricier, but one I got on sale and the other pair I actually have a coupon code for. The ones I got on sale are from Nordstrom and they are the Zella leggings. These are also available at Nordstrom Rack and most of the time you can find them there cheaper than what I got them for on sale. I’m sure they will be having a lot of sales coming up soon too for the holidays. These are good for working out and don’t have any cut-outs or anything. They also hit your waist normally, meaning not low rise or high waisted. I wore these for a cycling class and they didn’t fall down or anything like that, so workout approved.

These last leggings are by Kora Fitness. These are the ones I have a coupon code for, which is aliciabice15, and it will get you 15% off anything on the site. I have a post talking more about Kora Fitness if y’all want to check that out. You can read it here. I won’t go into too much detail since I have that post, but a portion of every purchase goes to a charity of your choice. They have 4 different ones they are partnered with. Anyways, these leggings are high waisted and these are the sculpt leggings, meaning they help hold everything in. I love wearing high waisted leggings with crop tops because you don’t have to show your stomach if you don’t want to. If you like wearing leggings and just your sports bra running or at the gym high waisted leggings are good because it doesn’t show quite as much.

I wanted to add a couple of accessories in this post too. The first accessory item is a pair of simple black heels. They can be open toe, peep toe, high heel, low heel, skinny heel, block heel, any kind you like best. I think these are good to have because they go with so much. Like I said before, closet staples are pieces that can be used in multiple ways. You can wear these with dresses, jeans, shorts, dress pants, pretty much anything! This pair I got at Target for around $25. You can find basic black heels pretty much anywhere, and they don’t even have to be expensive. If you did want to splurge on some shoes, a simple black heel would be a good shoe to splurge on in my opinion.

This is definitely optional, well all these pieces are because they are just my opinion haha, BUT, y’all could probably do without this item but I still wanted to add it, a pair of colorful heels. I love wearing all black and adding a pop of color or all white and adding a pop of color, and a colorful heel is such an easy way to do that. You could also add a pair of statement earrings the same color as your shoes too and that would be super cute. If you didn’t know this about me pink is my favorite color, so my pop of color heel choice is pink. I got these at Target as well.

Last but not least, another optional piece is a ball cap. Not everybody is a hat person so everyone doesn’t have to get one, but I think it’s good to have at least one. I like them so much mainly because I don’t like to wash my hair very often and this is a great way to hide it, haha. I also love wearing a hat when it’s raining when I don’t want to wear a rain jacket or take an umbrella, especially in the summer since it’s usually too hot for a rain coat. There are two that I wear the most, a nike one and the green one pictured. The green is from Target as well and I’m pretty sure it was on sale for about $5, if I’m not mistaken. It was definitely under $10. I wear it all the time and since my eyes are hazel/green it makes them pop since they match the hat, which is good for when I’m not wearing much makeup, haha. My nike hat I actually got for one of my marathons because it was supposed to rain during the race and I wanted to protect my face. Now, I wear it all the time. It is great for running because it has hole around the back so it’s very breathable.

I know this post was a little lengthy, but I wanted to make sure I covered all the basics. I really hope y’all enjoyed reading my closet staples and I hoped this helped and maybe gave y’all some ideas for items you already have in your closet! What are some of your must have pieces??
